Those pages use schema markup. It is a small block of code that tells search engines what each part of a page means. When Google trusts that code, it can show extra details like star ratings, prices, and FAQs right in the results. Plain pages miss that boost.
We see this gap on almost every site we rescue. The content is good, but search engines have to guess what it is about. Schema removes the guesswork. It hands Google a clean label for your business, your articles, your products, and your reviews.
In our work across more than 150 projects, schema is one of the cheapest wins we can add. It does not change how a page looks to a human. It changes how machines read it. And in 2026, machines include AI answer engines, not just Google.
Schema markup is structured data that labels your content in a shared vocabulary from schema.org. You add it as code, usually in a format called JSON-LD. Search engines read it to understand the people, products, and facts on your page. It is a translation layer between your content and machines.
The vocabulary comes from schema.org, a project backed by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex. It gives every common thing a type. A business is an Organization. A blog post is an Article. A product is a Product. Each type has fields, like name, price, or author.

For most sites, four types cover the bulk of the value: Organization, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, and the type that matches your main content, like Article, Product, or LocalBusiness. Start with these before you chase niche types.

This is where schema earns its keep in 2026. AI systems need to resolve entities, meaning they need to be sure the brand on your page is your company and not something else with the same name. Schema spells that out. It links your brand name to your logo, your social profiles, and your site. That reduces the chance a model mixes you up or skips you. You add schema as a JSON-LD script in the head or body of each page. On most platforms you paste it into a custom code field. On Webflow, we add site-wide schema in the page settings and dynamic schema inside CMS templates so every new entry gets correct markup on its own.
The manual way is to write the JSON-LD by hand and drop it into a custom code block. This works for a homepage or a contact page that rarely changes. You define the type, add the fields, and save. Google gives a sample block for every supported type in its documentation.

The biggest mistake is marking up content that is not on the page. Google is strict here. Its guidelines say do not add structured data about information that is not visible to the user, even if the information is accurate. Break that rule and you risk a manual penalty, not a reward.
The second common error is fake or padded reviews. Adding Review schema with ratings you invented is against Google rules and can get your rich results removed. We only mark up reviews that are real and shown on the page. The same goes for prices and stock. If it is not true and visible, it does not go in the markup.
The third is neglect. Schema is not set and forget. Types get deprecated, fields change, and Google updates which rich results it shows. We check markup when we touch a site, because broken schema can be worse than none. It sends wrong signals to the exact systems you are trying to reach.
Use two free tools. Google Rich Results Test shows whether a page qualifies for rich results and flags errors. The Schema Markup Validator on schema.org checks that your code is valid against the vocabulary. Run both before you publish, then watch Search Console for warnings.
The Rich Results Test is the one that matters for search features. Paste a URL or your code, and it tells you which rich results the page can earn and what is broken. Fix the errors it lists. Warnings are optional fields you could add for a fuller result.
After launch, Google Search Console becomes your monitor. It has reports for each rich result type and tells you when Google finds errors on live pages. We check it on a schedule, because problems show up as your content grows. A tool like Semrush or Ahrefs can flag schema issues at scale too, but the Google tools are the source of truth.
