What Does Generative UI in AI Overviews Mean for Your Pages?
What Does Generative UI in AI Overviews Mean for Your Pages?
As of September 2026, Google is building small interactive answers inside AI Overviews instead of only writing paragraphs. Google calls this generative UI. It assembles visuals, tables and simple tools in real time. For site owners, it means the answer box can now do a job your page used to do.
We build marketing sites for B2B companies, and this is the question clients keep asking us. If Google can draw the chart, run the simple calculation and show the comparison, what is left for the page to do? The honest answer is that plenty is left, but it is not the same plenty as two years ago.
This piece walks through what Google actually shipped, what we know from Google's own posts, and how we would change a content plan because of it. We are going to stay close to what is confirmed, because there is a lot of guessing about AI search right now and very little of it is useful.
What Is Generative UI in Google Search?
Generative UI is Google building a custom layout for a single answer. Instead of a fixed block of text, Search can put together interactive visuals, tables, graphs or small simulations on the fly. Google described it at Google I/O 2026 as Search designing a custom layout in real time.
Google Research first showed generative UI in November 2025 alongside Gemini 3, and it appeared in the Gemini app and in AI Mode. At I/O 2026 in May, Google said the capability would come to everyone in Search that summer, free of charge, with custom trackers and mini apps landing first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States.
In August 2026 it started showing up in AI Overviews. Search Engine Journal reported on 19 August 2026 that Google had confirmed generative UI was rolling out in AI Overviews, with full availability expected in the following weeks. Google's own August 2026 AI recap, published on 1 September 2026, describes Search helping people grasp complex concepts through interactive visuals and generating practice quizzes for exams like the SAT, ACT, GRE and LSAT.
Why Did Google Put Interactive Answers Inside AI Overviews?
Because AI Overviews is where the volume is. Generative UI began in AI Mode, which is opt-in. AI Overviews shows up in ordinary search results for ordinary queries. Moving the feature there takes it from a product people choose to a product people simply meet.
There is a second reason, and it is about query types. A lot of searches are not really requests for prose. Someone searching for a pH scale wants to see the scale. Someone searching for a unit conversion wants the number. Someone comparing two things wants them side by side. Writing four paragraphs at that person was always a compromise.
Google has been moving this way for a long time with featured snippets, calculators and knowledge panels. Generative UI is the same instinct with a model behind it, so the interface no longer has to be built in advance for each query type.
How Big Is the Audience for These AI Answers?
Large enough that it is not an edge case. In its post for website owners, Google says AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users. In the Search I/O 2026 post, Google adds that AI Mode queries have been more than doubling every quarter since launch.
Those are Google's own numbers about Google's own products, so read them with the usual care. Still, the direction is clear, and it matches what we see in client Search Console data: impressions holding up, clicks under pressure, and a widening gap between the two.
Google also now reports on this. Its June 2026 announcement for website owners introduced impressions metrics and information about which pages appear in AI responses and in what countries, rolled out to UK site owners on 3 June 2026 and to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026.
Does Generative UI Replace Tool Pages and Calculators?
It threatens the thin ones. If your page is a single input box that multiplies two numbers, Google can now generate that inside the result. Search Engine Journal made this point directly in its September 2026 piece on generated interfaces competing with tool pages, and we think it is the right worry.
What it does not threaten is a tool that carries real judgment, real data or real state. A pricing calculator that knows your actual rate card is not reproducible by a model guessing at market averages. A benchmark tool built on your own dataset is not reproducible at all. The difference is whether the tool is a formula or an asset.
We wrote about this trade-off in our piece on free tool pages as an SEO play, and the advice has tightened since. Build the tool that needs your data. Skip the tool that needs only arithmetic.
What Kind of Content Gets Pulled Into a Generated Interface?
Structured, unambiguous, self-contained content. A model assembling a table needs values it can lift without inference. A model drawing a comparison needs two things named clearly and described in the same terms. Prose that buries the numbers in a story is harder to use.
In our work this has been the most practical change. We now write the comparison as a real HTML table with clear headers, put the number and its unit in the same cell, and state the source in the sentence next to it. That is good writing anyway. It just happens to also be machine readable.
The same logic applies to definitions, specifications and steps. Say the thing plainly in the first two sentences under the heading, then expand. If the first sentence is throat-clearing, a retrieval system has nothing to grab.
How Should You Structure a Page for This?
Lead every section with a direct answer, keep each claim to one paragraph, and make your data extractable. This is the same discipline that earns featured snippets, which is not a coincidence. Retrieval systems reward clarity because clarity is cheap to parse.
Three concrete habits carry most of the weight. First, headings that match how people actually ask, not clever titles. Second, an answer of roughly forty to sixty words directly under each heading before any context. Third, numbers that always travel with a named source and a year, so a model quoting you is quoting something checkable.
We covered the wider mechanics in our guide to optimising for Google AI Overviews. Generative UI does not change that playbook. It raises the price of vagueness.
Do You Lose Traffic When Google Builds the Tool?
On those queries, often yes. That is the uncomfortable part and it should be said plainly rather than managed with optimism. When the answer is fully contained in the result, the click is not needed and the click does not happen.
The useful response is not to chase those queries harder. It is to move weight toward queries where a generated interface cannot finish the job: queries about your product, your category, your approach, and queries where the reader needs a person or a proposal at the end. Those still resolve on a site.
It also changes what a good blog post is for. A post that exists to capture a definition query is a shrinking asset. A post that shows how your team thinks, with numbers and named sources, is the thing an AI answer cites and a buyer later reads in full.
What Should a Marketing Team Change This Quarter?
Audit which of your pages are answer-shaped and which are argument-shaped. Answer-shaped pages, meaning definitions, conversions and simple how-tos, are the ones most exposed. Argument-shaped pages, meaning frameworks, teardowns and opinions with evidence, are the ones worth more investment.
Then check your reporting. With Google's generative AI performance data now available to all site owners, impressions in AI features are visible in a way they were not in 2025. Separate that from classic search impressions before you conclude anything about a traffic change.
Finally, look at your tables and your statistics pages. We treat these as citation surfaces now, and we have written about statistics pages and AI citations for that reason. Clean tables with sourced numbers are the single easiest upgrade most B2B sites can make.
Where Does Search Go From Here?
Toward more interface and less list. Google's I/O 2026 announcements included Information Agents that monitor the web for a user's criteria and an intelligent search box handling text, images, files and video. The pattern is Search doing more work before a person reaches a website.
That is not the end of websites. It is the end of websites whose only job is to restate public information. The sites that keep winning are the ones with something on them that nobody else has: a real opinion, a real dataset, a real product, and pages fast and clear enough to be quoted.
